about my mothers family

At that time to curtail child marriages an act as passed by the government. That act was called Sarada act.But in those days girls were got married befor they reached puberty. Especially in brahmin families. if there were unmarried daughters who had already reached puberty, it was sin. Socially ,they were looked down. so, my grandfather took our aunt -Kotamma to hyderabad and got her married in a hotel.Kotamma and Nagabhushan rao had five children. They were Nagamani Rao, Srungeri.Sasirekha,Usha ,venkateswarrao and oneeldest daughter whose name I dont remember.
Subbulamma was the second daughter. She was married to Narayana rao near EEthamukkala near chirala. She was very beautiful. she was well read in those days. But in later days she had fits. There was no proper madical attention for her ailment and she slowly detereorated in health. Her only daughter, Kanthakkayya was married to my maternal uncleRama Rao later. They had three sons. They were Subbarao, Prakash(we used to cqall him yerrabbai as he was fair) and thelast one with squint eye.
My mother Seethakanthamma was the third one. She studied upto third standarad.Karedu is near seashore. In those days they used to learn letters by writing in the sand. They learnt sanskrit poems and songs from elders. My mother sings the sings even today which she learnt during her child hood in those days from her neighbours. She was married when she was eleven years old.First my fathers sister and maternal uncle had gone to see my mother. Then she was playing with her friends wearing a skirt and blouse. My grand parents were not initiALLY INTERESTD for this match. but My mothers elder uncle was very adamant that this match should be accepted at any cost. he even went on hunger strike and sulked that finally went through it.my father was seven years older to my mother. bY the time of his marriage he appeared for SSLC but failed. He was living with his sister and working as assistant with some reddy. My mother first gave birht to amale child but he did not survive for many days. After words wewere born. Rajeswari, narasimharao Sarojani.Chandramohanrao(Puroshottamarao and padamavathi(myself) were born in this order.
Ramarao was their only son. So he waslooked after preciously. He was given special food.My mother used to feel for the inequality shown by her parents.he did BA at nellore staying with my parents. he secured job in Railways. He married Kanthakkayya. They had four sons and one daughter. they areGopala krishanmurthy, sRinivasa rao. Satyanarayana rao,Padmavathi and Nrasimharao.
Rangamma was the youngest in the family. Though she was dark in complexion she was very beautiful. Her voice was also very different and sweet. She would talk like a child and we feel like hearing it more and more. Her husband was Rama murthy. he was union leader in southcentral railways. They were stationed at Bitragunta. They had three children. They are Shiobha , RAvi and purnachandra rao.Ravi married agirl of his choice. but on the sixteenth day he fell under the running train while getting down and died. That was great blow to them. That girl later went to US and married again.
THis is what I know about my mothers family.

about my mothers family

My mothers name is Seetha kanthamma. Her parents were Ghali Narasimha Rao and Sundaramma.Actually his native place was chinnaganjam in Prakasam district. But one lady named lakshmamma/Subbamma brought him to Karedu and brought him up . After her demise, her property passed on to him. Then ,our grandfather,Narasimha rao called his two brothers to Karedu. One was elder to him. He did not marry and led the life of a sage.Other one was younger and in later years he became the second karanam of Karedu. So practically all the three brothers stayed at karedu and farming for their livelihood.
Actually he married one lady who probably died in child birth or due to some disesase. She did not have any children.Later he married our grand mother ,Sundaramma. She was hard working and intellogent lady. She knew how to save ,plan and execute herthoughts into reality. As it was second marriage for our grandfather, probably they put some conditions. Hehad to look after his widowed sister inlaw whom we used to call as mamakkayya.and also his botherin law who was young at that time. Slowly they fourished. he even did some contract works in PWD at nellore in those days.Hehad four daughters and one son. They were Kotamma, Subbulamma, SeethakanthammaRama rao andRangamma.
He married his first daughter to Nagabhushan rao when she was eight years old.those were the days when Sarada act has come into force.

As in very summer holidays, that summer also we went to Karedu. My cousins and my mothers siters also came.It was very hilarious. Wewere playing all the time. our mamakkayya was telling us stories whileputting rice balls in our hands for eating during nights.Day started normally. My maternal uncle got ready early and told my grandmother that he was going to town on some business for 2-3 days and left.By 9-30am,there was hungama near my grand father. i dont know actually what happened. suddenly every one started crying. local people came in groups to see. Some one said our grand father pased away. Every one was asking for our uncle. they sent people to kavali to find him. They could not catch hold of him inform of the calamity. It was slowly becoming evening . they could not much longer. So without my uncles knowledge or arrival, our grand fathers cremation had taken place. After the third day ,our uncle came and it was shock to him. Hw was the only son  he could not be contacted properly in time. That is what is called fate. everone wept  like anything.

of what my second sister tlells

Then even our neighbors got alerted  and they went in search of me. It seems I was founf by a policeman near railway station . Hefound me crying and asi was a small child I could not tell him anything. One of our neighbors saw me there with the police man and told that i was their neighbors child and brought me back.
my second sister , sarojani was a cute little thing. even today she doesnt look her age. She loks younger than me from the begining.Oneday , she was trying to hold me to the hip and walking on the road. She could not hold me tight and hence dropped me to the ground. At the same tome,an obese man with rice bag was comig in the rickshaw  and rickhshaw ran over me. My sister was afraid I would be bruised and my mother would scold her. But actually nothing happened to me. so she took me home. From then onwards she would never try to carry me.In that house there were  many families living. Of them, Padmavathamma and her son Seshadri were our best friends. As i knew she was a widow but her faceso pleasant and attracitve. they used to be so affectionate towards us. Seshadri ,her son was also a nice guy. He used to sing very nicely.

what my eldest sister told about me

My sister ,Rajeswari was ten older to me. when I was born , she was studying  sixth class. When she knew  my mother had delivered a girl ,she came to christia hospital atnellore to see me. most of the time , she used to look after me.She used to make me go to sleep and then only she would start studying. When my father was working at mallemadugu project near tirupathi. I had  fever. Then my parents walked all the way from mallemadugu to tirupathi to take me to doctor. My mother was carrying me and my father was walking behind holding an umbrella to ward off sunrays and heat. Later , we were living at Tirupathi opposite Govindarajaswamy temple  in tami brahmins house. It was near to railway station. One day my father came home and asked for me. My mother was in kitchen doing some snacks. She casually replied i would some where nearby. But he adamantly asked my sisters and brothers to bring me. Nowhere was I to be seen. He was angry and asked my mother to stop what she attending in thekitchen and search for me. all went out in search of me in nearby houses but to no avail. They were all weeping that they had almost lost me. Because Tirupathi was a pilgrimage centre and there were rumours that children werestolen and made beggars or to some other nefarious activities.

what my mother &sisters tell about my childhood

when my mother was carrying me  and she was in her eighth month pregnancy ,my father angry with her for some reason. So when she was sleeping on the floor he sat on her chest and slapped her hard many times. She could not escape him.He was sadistic most of the time with my mother. He did not even let her attend her brothers marriage. Then her parents sent sweets  and others to her.He did not let her eat them . he did not even allow her to give to some others. Hemade her dump them intrash cans kept atthe end of the street. She wept vey much. So many times  she tried to commit suicide being unable to withstand his cruelty.Once she tried to fall into the well but he saved her. After I was born , he sent her to karedu to bring money from her parents. She was humiliated  . she could not do anything because he would not let her into the house if did not go there and ask them money. In the midafternoon of summer she walked long distance carrying me ,barefoot to her mothers house weeping all the way. Many of the villagers who knew her were asking what had happened. she could not even answer them.Because of my fathers behaviour she was not given respect even in her mothers house.Once she had to  overstay there  because one after another we children had measles . So she could not leave the village. Then my grand mother who wa then at chennai with her son wrote a letter asking when she would be leaving the house. ther were so many other incidents for which she felt very much. she could not share her problems with any one. MOst of the problems were due to my father. so she could tell him these. She was not talkative and mixed easily with others. Mainly she was an introvert .
